Challenges in targeting viral infections

Ion channels are not only important in cancer, but are also responsible for driving viral diseases such as Influenza, COVID-19, etc. Viruses such as the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus enter cells and can propagate using the host machinery. V-ATPases are ion channels that transfer H+ ions into vesicles thereby promoting viral entry and replication. v-ATPase inhibitors that block this viral entry and replication have long been used to treat viral infections. However, these drugs are associated with high toxicity and immunological issues.

In addition to showing anti-cancer activity, MSP008-22, has demonstrated efficacy against viral infections due to its ability to block ion channels. Additionally, it also boasts an excellent safety profile both in vivo and in vitro.
